Picnic at Mr. Lacey Shaw's Aug.5

The rain obligingly held off, so that we had a delightful picnic meeting,Mr. Lacey Shaw and his sister Miss Shaw being the cordial hosts of the occasion.

The minutes were read and approved. Cousin Mary Brooke then read a charming account from the Geographic Magazine, of the observation of bird families with a color camera, at the close range afforded by a photographic blind.

Mr. Clarke Slade introduced his two articales also very interesting, by a query as to the popularity among our Horticultural members, of the Rural New Yorker. A good many members, he discovered, find it valuable, and relieved his mind. Avoid stem rot in peas, he read from it, by rotation of crops. Mildew requires spraying with Bordeaux mixture. Control plant lice by a spray of nicotine sulphate. Plant early and deep and enjoy the perfect vegetable. Delphiniums are good to plant behind gladioli. Larkspurs are suprisingly free from insect attacks, Mr. Slade spoke of the 10 feet delphiniums at Wellville, N.Y.; and other members attested to the fine displays in Maine and California.

Our Horticulture travels! Cousin Mary Hutton graphically described her visit to the Connard-Pyle rose gardens in Penna., at the time of the commemoration of the Grand Duchesse Charlotte of Luxembourg rose.

Roses in December! Lill Stabler read how to dip rosebud stems in wax, then wrap and store the buds for winter blooming.

Similary, said Elizabeth Canby, soak huckleberry and Japanese maple stems overnight in equal portions of glycerine and rose water, to make a decoration for wintertime.

Forethought: Remove perennial weeds now xxx from the lawn, in the preparation for fall seeding. For true phlox, keep the seed from forming and dropping. Rest amaryllis and lycoris by turning pots on their side now. Cut back overgrown annuals, give them plant food, and have a second blooming season. Give roses their last feeding before Aug. 15th.
