H/4/1943-1-
April 1943
in the Community House (Highlands)
It was a windy day and the thermometer
wavered in the 40's, but 16 dauntless souls
gathered in the Community House for the April
meeting of the Sandy Spring Horticultural Society.
Everyone was in good spirits and particularly
enjoyed the delicious Highlands coffee.
Following the reading of the minutes, Lillie
Stabler read a pleasing article on the utilitarian
value of attracting birds to our grounds. In
that they consume thousands of insects and pounds
of weed seeds, birds are our valuable allies.
Even in winter they destroy grubs, scales, moths, etc.
It is therefore worth inducing birds to reside
near one's garden by providing nesting material,
houses, and plantings of berried vines and shrubs.
Do you know your greens? read Mariana Miller
from the Farm Journal. The first shoots of
dandelions, cowslip, marsh marigold, wintercress,
mstard, horseradish, young alfalfa, may be used
raw on salads, or cooked. Wild greens to be
steamed are poke, milkweed, creeping purslane,
chicory. Land cress is refreshing either way.
The new Garden Magazine shown by Elza Thomas
seems to be very good. Its editorial pointed out
how "luxuries today are assuming the permanency of
snow on a roof", so let us all take some vital
part in growing what we eat. (The Home Garden)
Forethought: Broccoli is an easily grown
substitute for cauliflower. Delay pruning of
evergreens to just before growth starts. If lawn
seed is to be sown, do so promptly. The article
on the rare, New England white rhodora, described
its blossoms shining with ethereal beauty.
Ass't Sec'y Mary Moore Miller gave the
remarkable lists of fruit and vegetables brought
from Tanglewood and the Highlands. - hardy lettuce,
courageous asparagus, etc. There has been ice 4
out of the last 9 mornings.
It was agreed to hold box supper meetings.
in May at The Cedars, in June at Edgewood.
Further meetings will be decided then. Hostesses
are to provide drinks.
After the by-laws were read, the officers of the Society
were re-elected for terms of 2 years.
Mrs. Bryan at Sherwood will see that any
surplus vegetables donated this summer will be
canned for next winter's use at the school.
