season. Bring in houseplants, syringing folliage and airing
them by open doors. Clean off aphids. Respace pips of lily-of-the-valley
every 3 to 5 years. Clean perennial beds, removing
seed pods and burning trash. Pansies should go in
well-drained soil and be covered lightly after the first
frost. Bring in things for dried arrangements. If malathion
is used for aphids, do not use within 10 days of
harvest of edible crops, such as turnips. She reminded
us that we should not regret the passing of summer when
we have the beauty of autumn to take its place.
Douglas Farquhar, our meteorologist, said September's
highest temperature was 88°, the low 46 degrees. 78°
was the average high and 58° the average low. The mean
temp. was 68°. There were 5.1 inches of rain, which was
a little ahead for the monthly average in Sept.
In the absence of the Asst. Secy. no one was appointed.
Fieldhead had beautiful roses and seventeen varieties of
vegetables and fruits. Ulric Hutton had a specimen of Chinese
winterberry with lovely purple berries growing up the stem.
Roslyn had a bunch of mixed flowers, and English walnuts,
the latter trees bearing crops alternate years. Alloway
had flowers and bush beans. Oakley had chestnuts.
Under news of birds, Tanglewood reported having
seen a piliated woodpecker. Helen T. Hallowell regretted
that only four kinds of birds were using her feeder, - jays,
mockers, cardinals and song sparrows. It was generally
thought that the birds could still get wild seeds from
weeds and will move in to feeders when they are gone. Robert
H. Miller reported hearing wild geese go over on Oct. 3rd.
The membership comm. was asked to consider a family
for the vacancy left by the Havens and to report in April.
The Treasurer turned over $19.27 when she resigned.
Questions: What about asparagus? Stop using it by
the 12th of June and cut off the tops the first of Oct.
Where is Walnut Grove? On Vineyard Rd. in Howard Co. Elizabeth
Ligon said two native chestnuts have been planted at
Great Ease and she hopes they and the deciduous magnolia
tree from Doris Lea will live and grow. We were told that
tree peony seeds take 2 years to grow in a flat and 7 years
to bloom. Buy a plant for greatest satisfaction! A bug
2 ½ inches long described by a member, brought no name for
it from the group. Houseplants can safely stay on a porch
for a while longer,- till colder. The Highlands had one
bloom in August on their night-blooming cereus and are
looking forward to blooms from 14 more buds. The latest
date for planting blue grass seed is Dec. 8th. The passion
flower vine is hardy and should live over out of doors.
