A: Mrs. Goff being absent. Mr. Smith read a
discussion on autumn color, a reprint
from Arnoldia, The arnold Arboretum paper.
The Eastern U S is one of the regions in
the world where brillant coloring prevails.
There is also a small spot in S. A. and a large
region in Eastern Asia, North and Central
Japan and a small area in SW Europe.
In North America the area extends from
Gulf of St. Lawrence to the Great Plains,
areas of extensive hardwood trees. The most
brillant areas are SE Canada and New England.
In th South where it is high - the
Blue Ridge Mountains and the Smokes the color
is just as brillant. Where there is rainfall
the leaves change color before they fall. Leaves
are green because of chlorophyl. In the fall
the rate of manufacture is reduced, the same
rate of decomposition is maintained. When there
is little chlorophyl manufacturred and
most already manufactured decomposes, the leaves
turn yellow. The red in leaves is caused
by another pigment. Bright sunny days manufacture
sugar then when followed by cold nights, the
leaves turn red. Tree may be red on sunny side
only. Swamp trees color first.

The Exhibit lists were read: Allan acres orchids
Cedals, jonquils, Mr. Iddings, eroid lilly
Springdale, horse chestnut, and violets.

Report on Birds. Some one saw a gull,
Mr. Bentley reported a sparrow hawk, which
catches birds in flight; Starlings are reported
as breaking up the nests of bluebirds and orioles.

leaf. This was carried over from last meeting.

The membership committee, Bob Miller, Helen
Farquhar
and Elizabeth Ligon asked for
suggestions in writing.

Question: Pete: There is a fall blooming spider lilly,
Where can I get bulbs? Woods Nursey

all sick. Mr. Iddings will take one. Mary
Moore

DDT with malython will cause scale to
disappear.
