Frances Thomas asked advice about pruning
a magnolia tree that was broken off with
two remaining prongs. Mr. Hutton said
cut off clean and use shellac and alcohol,
leave tree to take care of itself.
Elizabeth Ligon has pussywillows with
bumps. She cut them off and painted them.
Ans. it is diseased, a fly lays an egg
and it covers over. She can just hope.
How long leave jars on rose cuttings.
Keep on until May unless you dig one
up and find roots; if so take them off now.
Elizabeth Ligon wanted to know if cantelope
seeds planted inside and put out in
advanced growth would give cantelopes
sooner. They should.
Chicken Kricker wanted some discussion
on Stevenson article about the effect of
mulching roses. He said it caused another
set of roots. She was referred to Rust
Canby. Betsy Scott puts dirt up and fills
all in between with manure, Then pulls dirst
away from them. Mr. Hutton commented
that a lot depends on the terrain; one man's
meat is another's poison. Pay your money
and take your choice.
Ping wondered if he could put out 3 tomator
plants. Rose offered the hospitality of Pete's
greenhouse.
Douglas wondered if he had to clean up
all the cedar brush before Horiculture
meets. He was assured he did not.
Jack Bentley is interested in hand dug wells
and asked members to identify any hand dug wells.
One in Germany is reported 500 feet. One in
Spencerville 15 feet.
