Chestnut and the
successful efforts to
create a hybrid chestnut
tree. The U.S. Forestry
Service located 180
chestnuts that had resisted
the disease and have crossed
these with the Chinese
chestnut. Many of the
old trees were 6 feet in
diameter + 100 feet
tall. The tree was used
in tanning leather,
as a veneer basis and
also for utility poles and
of course for the chestnuts.
