Rust also wants to know how to care for his Amarylis? He
must be very careful of the roots, which insist on a dry rest be-
fore blooming next year. Betty Ligon tried several ways and this
was found to be best.

Betty Ligon asked can you keep tuberous begonias in green-
houses? They should also have that dry rest, and can be kept over
the winter in open bags.

Pete Ligon: If corn is sprinkled while bloomin- and silking
will it be hurt? Probably, but only for a few days at a time. The
Canbys lost some lima beans because of extra watering while the
pollen was falling on a few days of real dry weather.

Liz Canby has good woods earth for fresh soil; can this be
used in place of fertilizer? This sounds like Organic Gardening,
so check with them and "tie in" the right types of soil.

How should Walter Wilson use his old chip mulch? Very good
for azaleas, and mulch for strawberries or tomatoes. Unless it is
very well rotted, it can spread wild chrysanthemum or the Dutch
Elm disease.

Douglas Farquhar reported that his old seeds were broadcast,
but only string beans and kale have shown up so far in this drought.

Helen Farquhar: Does anyone want a little black curry dog?NO.

Guido Adelfio passed around some seeds from Italy, but no-
body here could recognize them, so we did not learn their identity.

On a recent trip to England, the Lawrences took a great many
beautiful slides of the countryside around Clive's old home. As
reader for the evening, Wendy conducted our tour through beautiful
gardens, over bridges, around cottages, churches and courtyards,
through villages, shops and farmyards, finally ending with a visit
to Clive's old family home called "The Gables" and of course, to
Windsor Castle. Wendy's excellent description of the scenes made
us all feel that we had shared in her journey, which will not be
soon forgotten.

Reluctantly, we returned to this side of the Atlantic for
adjournment at 9:40 pm, to meet in October at "Oakwood" with
John and Dorothy Weske.
