The USDA's scientist down there says they move more like
50 miles a year. At 200 miles a year the bees could cross
the Rio Grande in 1995; but at 50 miles a year they would
not be likely to enter the U.S.A. until the middle of the
next century. The way it looks now there is time to wait
and see if the African genes survive the trip through the
neck of Panama and the Latin countries below the Rio
Grande. Chances are that they will not survive, but if
they do Dr. Levin says our bug experts have countered insect
pests before and they can do it again when necessary.
Weather report.-- Douglas Farquhar gave us a resume
of the July weather. High 81 on July 24, Low 52. Average
high 81 and average low 65. Rain on 10 days for a total
of 8.19 inches. All rain in the first two weeks. It has
been two weeks since the last rain.
Report on Forethought, by Sylvia.-- Make up for lack
of rain by watering plants frequently when we have a dry
spell as at the present time; dig potatoes; use fungicide;
keep spraying your roses; turn compost, covering weeds
and grass; take cuttings of coleus; pinch of chrysanthemum
