THE HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
MAY, 1976.
The May, 1976, meeting of the Horticultural Society
met with Alan Thomas and Mrs. Mannakee at the Community
House. This was a memorable meeting, for it was the 100th
birthday of Mrs. Mannakee. Actually in looks, spirit,
charm and knowledge of plants Mrs. Mannakee is one of our
youngest members. The members paid their respects to Mrs.
Mannakee at length. A highlight was the television interview
of her at the County Council which we had the
privilege on the 7 o'clock programs of at
least two of our local television stations.
May is the month for the collection of our annual
dues of 50c a family. The collector passed among the members
and reported that 10 families had contributed a total
of$5.00. The secretary had reported before this collection
that the balance of funds in our treasury amounted
to $11.61. With the addition of this $5 collection the
funds in our treasury now amount to $16.61. The secretary
will be glad, nonetheless, to receive dues from any family
which did not participate in the dues collection at the
May Meeting.
General and Mrs. Morrison, who had been invited to
the May meeting, sent their regrets. Mrs. Morrison is a
member of the Gaywood Garden Club which was having a meeting
at the very same time as our May meeting, and as she
was scheduled to receive an award at that meeting she
could not on that account come to our meeting.
Helen Farquhar was our scheduled reader for this
meeting, but she too, could not be present. Flora Goff
read the article Helen had selected, entitled "Future
Gets Green for American Elm, Noblest of trees," published
