ing and less of one crop farming, and the replacement of
urban populations with village settlements largely self - governing
who would exploit small scale technology and do
some chickens, vegetable gardens, etc. Mr. Goldsmith believes
that democracy is compatible only with small societies
and not with mass society (There is an article with much the
notions in the July (1976) Readers Digest entitled "The New
American Migrants": it states that many urban Americans
are packing their bages and are heading for places that are
smaller, sunnier, safer, saner --- and that the big surge
is yet to come ).
Report on birds. - Betty Ligon reported that she had
seen a blue bird at Great Ease and promptly did some research
in the Peterson bird book, from which it would
appear that the bird was probably an indigo bunting.
Riverside and Springdale each reported seeing a blue bird,
simply that and nothing more.
Committee reports. - Betty Hartge, chairperson of
the membership committee ( on which the other members are
Helen Farquhar and Buzz Hussman ) recommended that the
by-laws be amended to provide that the membership committee
shall be a standing committee. The president stated that
this would require an amendment to be presented at one meeting
and voted on at the next meeting. A proposed amendment
will be submitted by the chairperson of the membership
