secret of happiness. Emerson said, 'Energy
is repose,' it is the master-sign of a great soul.
Robert Louis Stevenson said 'To be happy is the
first step to being pious'."

Hallie J. Bentley gave an amusing story,
"The Missionary Barrel," and Sallie R. Janney an
incident in the life of Clara Barton who saved
the lives of wounded soldiers one night after
a battle by having kettles of hot gruel made out
of corn meal in which bottles of wine for the Hospital
had been packed.

Sarah T. Miller brought a thoughtful essay
upon the fallacy of a navy, and Ellen Farquhar
a letter from our friend Laura Cox Bluck of
Bermuda describing a tremendous storm that
had recently swept over that island doing
much damage.

A second selection deplored the almost
universal habit of hoarding things, useless
things, to be looked over and moved, again
and again, as years go by. Some one had
said, "Give away, or destroy, all articles you
do not know to be valuable or believe to be
beautiful.

Mary E. Thomas introduced some of us
to a brand new poet, Arthur Guiterman, of whose
rippling verse the following is a specimen, -

"This is She"

"On order that must be obeyed
I sing of a dear little maid
a mirthfully serious, sober delirious
Gently impervious Maid,

And first we'll consider her eyes
Alike as to color and size.
Her winkable, twinkable merrily blinkable
Simply unthinkable eyes.

And last let us speak of herself
that blithe little gypsy and elf.
Her quite unignorable,
Absence - deplorable
Wholly adorable - self."
