leisure, I shall invest them so as to secure
most and best returns" She told
us Bulgaria has 20,000 acres of roses for
attar of roses and it takes 180 blossoms for 1 drop.
Eliza Moore's contribution was the trip
of "The Gad-about," - a house-boat on the James River
to historic plantations. The poem, - "Drop a Pebble
in the Water," - she also read, from which we
quote a verse, -
"Drop a word of cheer and kindness, in a minute you forget,
But there's gladness still a swelling and there's joy a-circling yet
And you've rolled a wave of comfort whose sweet music can be heard
Over miles and miles of water, just by dropping a kind word."
Elma P. Chandlee read of the wonderful question
Answerer of the U.S. Dept. of Agri., - Spillman, who
receives more mail than the President, and has
300 assistants. The "R.F.D" Routes and farm industries
are in his care. The only question he could
not answer was, "Where can I exchange a monkey
for a pig?".
These lines were read by Emilie J. Massey,
"Most all the other beautiful things in life
come by twos and threes, by dozens and hundreds!
Plenty of roses - stars - sunsets - rainbows, - brothers
and sisters - aunts and cousins - but only one
Mother in all the wide world." She asked
that contributions for the needle-work guild,
in money or old muslin, be brought to the
Feb. Meeting, and gave notice that bandages,
which were much needed, would be made
soon afterward for war-sufferers.
R. T. Miller read an amusing article on
"Saving day-light in Eng.," - where each member
of the family set the clock forward and then back.
Annie B. Kirk's article against cigarette
smoking among women was fully endorsed and
we regret that many reformers of the day are
guilty of indulging in the pernicious habit.
Lizzie Willson told us of the only woman
Evangelist, - Mrs. J.D. Barr, who holds a Sunday
aft. "men-only" mtg. in every city campaign. She is
a member of the Western Y.M. of The Society of Friends.
Lizzie W. asked how to remove Kerosene stain
