2nd reader Edith Hallowell read an article on parrots, volunteer articles handed in by Frances Stabler ; a method of flavoring water melons while growing 2nd on planting Lima beans; the experiment was made of planting the beans with eyes up, with the eyes down and laying the beans flat. 3 more beans came up of those planted falt and two more with eyes up than of those planted eyes down. E.S. Iddings read an article on Evergreens recommending pruning them late in Summer when the resin exudes and covers the wound rather than fall or winter; plant in dry grown and enrich.

Questions

1 Should strawberry beds be mulched now with straw? Yes

2. If the flower beds are filled up with rich earth, is there danger of covering rose bushes too deeply? If the beds have to have much filling it will be better to raise them slightly with a spade and fill in under them

3 What treatment for a Palm which is turning brown? It may be too dry Renew the earth once in 18 months

4 How many plant plant seeds in the open ground? A few do but the majority think it best to start in boxes in the house or in a hot bed or frame with glass

5 Should manure on an asparagus bed be forked in? Yes, early before it starts to grow

6 Should mulch on strawberry beds be removed? Not till they are done bearing

7 What is the best early corn? Adam's Early Crosby's and Henderson's

8 How low down trim rose bushes? It depends on the kinds

9 When strawberry runners have filled the space between the rows should they be [dug] or mulched ? Leave until they are done bearing

10 Who has done any gardening? Very few. One had planted peas and beets another peas and potatoes and others a few seeds

11 How get rid of ants in a lawn? Try sulphur

12 Will it be safe to move a white lilac Yes. Soak with water the day before and move with care and it will be safe

13 What is the best commercial fertilizer for strawberries? Possibly bone dust.

14 How treat a grape vice that continues to weep? Once said stick a potato on weeping end Another said weeping would not hurt it

Samuel Hopkins said his sweet potatoes kept in sand had rotted while those kept in chaff kept perfectly

Complaints were made that [salsify] had failed last season from unknown causes

The secretary brought seeds of the tea plant for distribution.

In our walk we found the flower garden looking neat but it was too early to have plants set out the hot beds looked well.

The poultry was thriving and a building devoted to young chickens was a good thing, the coops with little yards around them were admired; they keep each brood with its mother and safe from cross hens
