Questions 1 How make an ice house keep its contents better? Deepen it six or eight feet break up the ice, improve the drainage by working up the bottom. Enlarge it every way. In filling; put the ice that breaks up around ncxt the wall, leaving a depression for the next load. Deepening the house was considered the important idea

It was suggested to plant crimson clover whenever a garden crop comes out to improve the soil.

Anna Farquhar told in an interesting way of the proposed reading room for the colored people, it the lower room of their Hall. Funiture and sympathy would both be appericiated

H/9/1916 -4. 263 The might be divided but would probably be more satisfactory to raise new ones.

4 What is known of a worm which makes a hole in the fruit? no answer.

5 Should old roses be moved this fall or in the spring? Divided opinions

6 What should be done with bees in the weather boarding of a house? Get some one with experience to take them out

7 Is it too late to sow Kale? No

8 What chews the bark of Geramiums? Probably rabbits

9 What best way to handle brown corn when harvested? Put on racks or it can be dried on the ground or on hay or hang in the wood shed. Clean the seeds off with a a curry comb, during winter

10 Can Grimes Golden Apples on a tree which has been injured by the fire at Annersley fire be picked now? Yes

11 Is it worth while to water egg-plants as late as this? No. Mary Magruder will be glad to have hardy bulbs and plants for her School house grounds

Eliza Moore had a fine patch of corn stolen and several members lost chickens in the same manner. At Rockland they have all except 69 of 686 chickens put out this spring.

264 H/10/1916 -1Norwood October 3rd 1916 Our last meeting was a delighful gathering socially and we all love each other better for the happy summer we have spent together

The minutes were read and accepted. 1st Reader, Edith Hallowell, read a poem. 2nd reader an article on the making and care of lawns volunteer E. L. Iddings read of the elaborate gardens of Pliny A. D. 25

Forethought This is the last meeting and there is not much to add to the advice of last month. Those who have not dug Sweet potatoes should do it The warming of two frosts admonish us that Lima beans should be gathered, green and dry and a lot of tomatoes brought in and peppers, Corn can be cut and shocked It will keep a long time for puddings and fritters It is time to get plants housed or protect them on the porch

Clear off your gardens and get them ready to be plowed. Fall ploughing makes the ground lighter It can be worked ealier in the Spring Forethought sent a clipping from the Rural New Yorker on condensing space

The Exhibits were many and very fine of vegetables fruits and flowers.

Questions 1 Should lawn grass seed be sown now? Spring is the time

2 What success with ever-bearing strawberries? Very little

3 What should be done with lillies of the valley now? Thin out and transplant and manure. To have them bloom in doors bring in sod and put in a dark place for a few weeks

4 Do rats and mice eat onions? Yes

5. Is is well to have the questions & Exhibits of last meeting read? The questions are read but not the Exhibits Frederic Stabler reported an experiment made by planting pumpkins and squash near together and the result was a decided mixture

6 When separate rhubarb? In the Spring Roses transplanted in the fall, have to be protected with leaves or straw about the roots to prevent freezing and thawing which does the real damage in winter To trim roses in the fall cut out the old growth and leave the young

7 When feritilze strawberries? Now unless the ground is already rich. Put straw on them about December 1st.

8 What plant in sunny window box? Impatience Lullana and Geraniums.

9 How rid a lawn of moles? Put moth balls in the runs and roll ofter

Our walk down the box lane and through the gardens was enjoyed fully; the strawberry beds and vegetables looked find and many flowers were blooming, many of us came back from the gardens armed with great sheaves of marigolds to brighten our tables for weeks to come.

The Executive Committee will decide the meetings for next year and we will be notified in the Spring.
