Cut out the old raspberry canes, leaving the new growth for future bearing.

Leave glass jars over rose cuttings until spring.

No one has raised nutmeg squash which are now found in market.

Albert Stabler bought cherry trees several years ago that have proved not the kind he ordered. He was encouraged to buy cutting back in the spring + make cleft grafts on them.

The secretary was asked to send a message of love + sympathy to the Cloverly family with the hope that their anxiety over the illness of ther dear mother + sister would soon be relieved. Readers for next meeting - Robert H. Miller Jr. and Helen N. Farquhar.

It is not possible to tell of all that was to be seen when taking our walk, but we are sure we all brought away with us a mental picture of the beauty of the beauty of the mass of bloom in beds of shasta daisies and lilies our host has propagated, as well as other bloom in flower garden and borders.

The vegetable garden showed no lack of rain & we note that for some reason there had been no bean beetles there so far and let us hope they will escape that pest. Adjourned to Highlands on August 2nd, '38. Mariana S. Miller - Secretary -

Highlands 2 Aug, '38 On August 2nd, the Horticulturists met at Highlands and after the reading and adopting of the last minutes, Helen Farquhar read of a method of getting rid of moles by fitting a piece of hose from the exhaust pipe of an automobile and putting the other end of the hose in the mole run then turn on the motor and let the monoxide gas do the work. It can also be used for killing rats in the same way. Helen also read that the best time to trim climbing vines is after they bloom and we should bear in mind that there are two kinds. one that makes its new growth canes right from the roots + should have the old canes cut out. That is the small clustered kind, while the large flowering ones send out laterals up and down the old canes + those laterals should be cut back close to the old stem. the raising of ornamental gourds during the depression to sell on thin road-side stand & has become so successful that they sell 600 000 annually, & to-day they are the largest gourd producers in the world, raising 600 varieties on 20 acres.

Anne Miller contributed an account of the commercial vegetable garden on lonely Hake Island in mid Pacific Ocean which was not inhabited until Pan American Au Air Line made it a stop on the trans-Pacific Clipper service.

It has built a hotel for passengers & employees & as these was nilling food or water on the island both - had to be shipped in - Summer they are trying raising vegetable in water with-out soil & hope ere long to make it a great success.

Forethought told us that Oriental poppies can easily be divided & transplanted this month - also pyretheum. Watch for small green worms on evergreen & spray with nicotine. Plant narcissus bulbs in August, & some evergreens do well if moved now. When pine mice frequent runs of moles, put powdered arsenic on pieces of carrot or apple & place in the runs.

There was a wonderfully fine display of fruits and vegetables and among the flowers were beautiful specimens of lilies, fine varieties from Ten Oaks

The hope that Andrew from the names given him for the Horticultural Lily will find one that he thinks suitable. Mrs. Floyd Harris of Virginia had the largest collection of lilies in this country and he had the privilege of naming one for her.

Our Community Council representative reported on the proposed opening of a health clinic in Montg. Co. if the money is forthcoming to finance it - and this locality was thought to be a good one for it. The vote was against dropping any of the meetings of the Council this year.

Questions

Emma Stabler's artemisia looks very forlorn though it had bloomed well earlier = she was advised to cut down to the ground and
