Original, handwritten diary of Ellen Stabler of Sandy Spring, Md. Diary contains six pages of intermittent entries from 1852 to 1855. Ellen Stabler (1834-1924) was a life-long resident of Sandy Spring, Md and member of the Sandy Spring Friends Meeting (Quaker). She never married and lived most of her life in the family’s home called Auburn.

3d. mo.27th. 1852.

A thunder storm in the morning and one in the afternoon; at 3 oclock could not see to read without a candle.

3d. mo. 22nd. 1853 I spent the day at Rose Cottage helping Virginia and Sallie get ready to go to Philadelphia

25th. Joe went to London. Sallie Porter spent the night here, her last visit before leaving her home for a land of strangers: but they are going in a good cause, and I trust they may succeed: Lucy went to Baltimore yesterday.

27th I called at Rose Cottage to take leave of the girls

29th. Virginia and Sallie leeft home this morning for Philadelphia, in company with Elizabeth Clinger.

1853 5th. mo. 6th. I came home today from a two weeks visit at Avondale. Marcella Thomas was married yes on 3d. day to Robert Sullineir

6th.mo. 6th. Edward Porter and Annie Kinnaid were married this evening: Joe waited on them: I walked to Roslyn store this morning.

15th. I called at Sherwood this morning, and saw Annie, the first time for nearly three months her mother is with her.

17th. Our old Jack died.

7th. mo. 12th. Annie Bond died this evening.

16th. I spent the afternoon at Sherwood with Annie M.

7th. mo. 18th. I spent the afternoon at Sherwood with Annie M. she goes home in a few days.

8th. mo. 17th. Brother, sister the children _ Frank and Harry, and myself spent the afternoon at Cherry Grove, a gust in the evening and we had to stay all night.

10th. mo. 14th. Snowed all day, to the depth of 5 1/2 inches: several sleighs out.

11th. mo. 14th. Aunt Maria died this morning.

15th. Aunt Maria buried this afternoon.

1st. mo. 26th. 1854 Ellen Frost died this morning. Virginia and Sallie Porter came to Clifton today, from Philadelphia

2d. mo. 15th. Joe and Phil went to Baltimore today on their way to Wheeling. Sallie Porter came here last evening to spend a few days.

20th. A very deep snow fell today nearly 2 feet deep.

7th. mo. 11th. Eliza Chandler died this morning: I spent the night at Rose Cottage.

10th. mo. 3d. Sallie Porter married today.

18th. Samuel Wetherald died this morning, is to be brought up here tomorrow to be buried.

11th. mo. 3d. I left Baltimore this morning, with a very kind friend _ Lydia Gilpin, came home with her to stay all night, on my way to West Chester.

4th. Arrived in West Chester about 5 oclock this evening; and met a very warm reception.

21st. Left West Chester on the 18th, dined at Joseph Gilpin's in Wilmington, came on to Baltimore in the afternoon, and staid until this morning, when I came home.

7th. mo. 3. 1855. Spent the day at Cherry Grove, helping wait on Virginia Porter, who is near her close.

7th. Virginia died this afternoon.

8th. Virginia was buried this afternoon: I came home after supper.

20th. I went to Clifton to spend a couple of days with dear Sallie Taylor, who leaves for her home in Chester County, in a few days. Uncle M. took Sallie, aunt R. and myself to see Marcella after supper.
