In course of his business he was called to
do work for Dr. Barkley, an American
missionary, a Presbyterian.
Here in the spring of 1853 he met a
young American named Philip Dickson,
who was suffering from tuberculosis. His
physician had advised a warmer climate
than New England. Being interested
in the movement for the restoration
of the Jewish people to Palestine he
decided with his young wife to go
to Palestine hopping in that warm climate
his health might be restored and he
might do missionary work.
They went first to the American mission
at Artas near Jerusalem but his
health failed so rapidly Dr. Barkley
had taken him home to die.
John was called to make his coffin.
