morning. Captain spoke to the steward about wasting the
fresh water. The steward replied “the passengers waste it”.
Captain told him to stop that talk. Then he became insolent
and Captain ordered him to go about his work, instead
he went in to the forecastle to the sailors muttering curses.
The mate ordered him aft. This he refused to do, and the
mate put him out by force the steward making a great
noise, Captain feels sorry about the affair, but must be
obeyed. For dinner had fresh mutton and shell beans,
fresh vegetables are a luxury at sea.

Nov 8 A fine day with a fresh easterly wind although
pleasant is not in our favor being a head wind.

Since being becalmed so much there is little to
releive the monotony save occasionally a school of
fish, still we have pleasant company a delightful deck
where we can walk, sit under the awning read and amuse
ourselves as one likes. Few Barks have an upper
deck but our Captain owns his ship and had her
