the Bark moves swiftly away on the mighty deep. All are
on deck watching to catch a last glimpse of our loved ones
on shore. One more look. One more wave of the hand, and
our last adieu is given. The shore recedes and friends
are lost from our sight. Shall we ever greet them again?
Soon we passed Point Shirley. The Farm School, Fort
Independence, The Light-house, and land is fast
disappearing from sight. Now the pilot leaves us
and in his little boat floats away over the bounding
billows and we are left to ourselves. What will be our
future is to us unknown. We trust in a power unseen
to Him who holds the universe in His hands.
October 12 After sailing a few hours on the eleventh we
were all seasick and kept in our berth
13 Sat up part of the day feeling miserably
14 Staid on deck most of the day. The others are still
sick. Have seen sails every day. This morning saw
two An English and American. For the English
bark our Captain put up our Ensign with name
