the ship tossed among the high waves, and amid rocks
and islands this morning a strong head wind is keeping
us from port. We had been thinking that today was
Thanksgiving. When we found we had made a mistake
Captain said, “Never mind we will have thanksgiving
in Smyrna and have a dinner of fruit that home
folks cant boast off.” He said we will kill the pig.
At once we all protested. Mary who you remember always
dispised a pig, yet she declares this pig is the prettiest
animal on board. We have on board a cat and a dog.
The dog is a Rio Janeiro specimen, has a long nose. Eyes like
white china tinted with blue which gives him a funny
look. He is not a great favorite. Puss growls and spits
whenever he appears. The pig trots around the main tower
deck sleek and contented. Once in a while he will slip
around the fore house among the flock of hens making a
great commotion. It seems as though he actually laughed
as he trots off. But to return to thanksgiving. Shall we ever
again sit around the festal board again in dear New England.
