an old Genose castle. Near by was the tomb of the Martyr
Polycarp over which waves a tall cypress. We hear chimings
of bells morning and evening. It has been a beautiful evening
the moon shining brightly. We were on deck, someone commenced
playing “tag”, then jumping rope, all playing like children
it was so pleasant to be quiet, at least we could stand without
reeling.

Dec 7 Wednesday. In the morning Mr Morgan with his wife
and Mr Ladd missionaries from the city came aboard. Afternoon
Mrs Ladd with her two children came. It was pleasant to meet
with them. They invited us to attend their weekly prayer
meeting tomorrow evening, which we accepted.

There are several man of war ships anchored here. Many sailing
vessels and small boats without number. Large flocks of sea
gulls are flying around.

Dec 8 After packing our effects preparatory to leaving our
sea home, and kind friends we went with Captain Blanchard
in his boat to shore, and stepped on “Terra firma” for the first
