where tradition says the whale cast up Jonah. Two large white
pillars mark the spot.

Dec 17 We stopped today at Latachea. It is a large city with
numerous trees within the city. In front of the city are the
ruins of a large castle which was demolished by the English in
1830. The natives here were rude and uncivil. All carried swords
and pistols. The captain of the steamer ordered his quarter boat
along side as many boats of the natives came along side showing
their weapons. One native came on board and brandished his
sword. Captain placed a man with a bayonet gun at the gate
which leads to the stairs going down from the boat with orders
to fire on them if they any more arms.

Dec 18 Last night I was taken sick with bowel trouble and
vomiting and was for a few hours very sick. The people were
very kind affording every assistance needed. We anchor at
Cypress today.

Dec 19 Monday. We stop at Beirout today Mr Jones
and Henry have gone on shore. All the passengers leave here
