Dec 26. Our boxes came out today from the consul where
they were left. They were brought on camels who kneel to be
loaded and unloaded, growling all the time as though angry.
One box was so large it could not be put on a camels back
and so four porters brought it on their backs. These porters
carry enormous burdens on their shoulders. Seem as though
the weight would crush them.

On unpacking found much of our crockery broken

Dec 28. Went this morning to the city to visit Miss
Williams School. It is near the water on the sea coast.
She has sixteen native girls to whom she teaches sewing
and English language. They seemed intelligent and
