We called on the cheif Jewish rabbi and quite a company of
jews lieing on divans smoking, and drinking coffee. The rabbi a
sked us to see his daughter. She is married and mother of
two children although she is only sixteen years of age. She
is deaf and dumb, yet we could understand her better than
those that speak, as she makes herself understood by signs
which are quite intelligible. We went through the principal
streets of Jaffa. All kinds of merchandise is open to the streets
on shelves. The streets like all the eastern cities are narrow
and filthy, filled with loaded camels and donkeys.

Sitting by the way side are many blind beggars reminding
one of New Testament days. Afternoon spent a pleasant
time with Miss Williams. She lives in the consul’s house.
