a young German. In the evening it rained a little.
Oct 29 It commenced to rain hard. It has been six months
and fourteen days since the last rain.

Nov 10 Received letter from Aunt Rebecca telling us
of the death of her little son Edwin.
Nov 21 Sent letters to Aunt Rebecca, and brother Walter
May 1855 Mr Jones and family went to Jerusalem for a few
months where he will have better opportunity to study the
language.
July Henry and I have both been very sick with Syrian fever.
July 4 1855 Another Independence day. In the morning 21 guns
were fired. And the American flag was hoisted on the consulate
and also at mast head on the Austrian steamer lying in port
to receive the Prince on his return from Jerusalem.
Our consul provided a feast to which he invited the
