native consuls of other country to Jaffa the Americans and other
foreigners, and the principal men of the city. Father offered
the following toast,

“May the principals of civil and religious liberty spread
around the wide world with the rapidity and benign
influence of the sun, and may this entertainment provided
by our consul and friend be promotive of uniting in one
brotherhood the whole human family.”

It was a very pleasant gathering and much more ceremony
then the proceeding year. The family all attended
except myself. I was not able, although I went for a ride
went out south, and came in by the quarantine grounds.

August 4 1855 The two young ladies who were with Mrs
Minor
returned to their home in Philadelphia

August 6 Sir Moses Monterfore, called on father. He is
deeply interested in the welfare of his jewish bretheren.

August 8, 1855 As Henry and myself have not fully recovered
from our long sickness, a trip to Jerusalem was advised.
So we prepared for the journey. With guides we started
