ancient wall is still standing. Went into Jeremiah’s
grotto where tradition says he wrote the Lamentations. I
picked some maiden hair fern from the cave.

This cave being on a hill overlooks the city of Jerusalem.
We returned through Jaffa gate.

Afternoon went out St Stephens gate east of the city, to
the Mount of Olives. Went to the top of a tower and had
fine view of Jerusalem on the east. The dead sea and
mountains of Moab to the west. We then went to the spot
where is pointed out the actual place from which Christ
ascended to heaven. It is marked by a white stone lieing
flat on the ground. We proceeded on to Bethany and into
the tomb where Lazarus was laid, and entered the house
of Mary and Martha, which is in ruins. All these places
are shown by guides as the true places spoken of in the new
testament. We walked back to the Mt of Olives, and around
for a time then home to the city through St Stephens gate.
