Aug 14 Sabbath. Service is held at Mr, Jones house. We attended
and met a Mr Simon who was a friend of brother Philip.

After tea with Mrs Jones, we walked out Lions gate intending
to go to the cemetery, but the sun was near setting so we were
obliged to return to the city. As the gates are shut at sundown
and no entrance to the city is allowed until sunrise the next
morning, nothing will cause them to open the gates after shutting.

There five gates to the city. Jaffa gate west. Lions gate south.
St Stephens gate east, and Damascus gate north. Golden gate is
also east it is in the rear of the Mosque of Omar, and is
never opened, as the Mahommadans have a superstition
that an enemy will enter that gate and destroy their mosque
and the city.

Aug 15 This morning went out to the cemetery, by the
mission school house, down the steep hill to the lower
pool of Gion, then walked up a hill where are many
old ruins. Passed on to the “Hill of evil Counsel” where
