Mosque stands where the temple of Solomon stood before
being destroyed by Titus. It was first built first by Kliaf
Omar in 636. AD. This mosque was taken down and one more
magnificent built in its place by Abdeliahik in 648. This
last was three years in building. At the time of the Crusaders
the Mosque was turned into a Christian church but in
1187, it was regained by the Moslems and purified by
being washed in rose water”

Aug 25 Wednesday. Left the Holy City for our home in Jaffa.
Staid over night in Ramlah and arrived at Jaffa at noon
much pleased with our fine trip and improved in health
although considerable weary with our long rides and so
much sightseeing.

Mahomed the prophet was born in Mecca in the Arabian Desert, in the year 570 A.D. A poor orphan and later a camel driver, he belonged neverless (sic) to the most distinguished tribe in the city that of (Hareish?) which had been hereditary shrine of the Arabian idolaters. Mahommed announced that he had been called to reform the religious practices of his time, and to proclaim the worship of one true God. He was persecuted by his neighbors and relatives and in 622 was forced to flee to Medina That year marks the beginning of the Moslim Era, and is known as the Hegira or flight From it the Moslem calendar is dated.
