sickness vertigo, diarrhea &c - I had
as is my custom ascertained the
edibility of the food before allowing
my peoples to touch it. The liver of the
young bear served me this [trial?]

Mr Goodfellow absented himself
from out little Sunday party - It has
been my custom ever since I came
aboard this brig to read prayers and
selected bible Chapters to the men - Mr
G. has now for two successive evenings
withdrawn from this exercise - the first
time such a thing was ever done by an
officer - The very crowded state of our one
apartment made the act very conspicuous.
We are so equalized by this close association
and the common danger which causes it
that my discipline and authority depend
almost entirely on my personal influence -
This I aid by adventitious means. Our
Sunday evenings will soon be followed by
lectures or rather talks upon nautical
subjects and the withdrawal of a single
member of our body has an unpleasant and
bad effect. I spoke to Mr. Goodfellow - in
a friendly way - assuring him that his con-
tinued absence would lessen my estimation
of him - and at the same time pointing
out the practical evils of his course.

[margin] Monday Oct. 9.

Blowling nearly a gale and snow
again covering the naked terrace slopes
and the floes - The severe gales have
carried off the entire snow deposits -
We commenced lifting the brig by a new
application of the same principle
the shores being single and fastened by
a grosse cut in the oak sheathing of
the vessel -
