of the other - and guided by an admirable know=
-ledge of ice topography wound behind hummocks
and ridges - making a serpentine approach
towards a group of pond lakes - descolorations
found afterwards to be open spots recently
frozen but surrounded by former and older
ice.

When within 1/2 mile of these the
line broke and each man crawled towards
a separate pool - Morton falling on his
hands & knees - attached himself to Myosu
The Walrus were then seen five in number
rising at intervals through the ice - They
all moved in a body rising together with
a sudden fracture of the ice and an
explosive puff which could be heard for
miles. Two large grim looking males
were conspicuous - as leaders of the group.
Then it was that the craft of these hereto-
=fore despised savages claimed our high
admiration. When the Walrus was above
water every hunter was flat and motion=
less - when about to descend - alert and
ready for a run - Hardly had the head
of the animal gone beneath the water line
before they were in rapid run - and again
as of by instinct - before the reappearance
of the beast they were motionless and
protected by a knoll of ice. They seemed
not only to know the time of his
absence but the spot at which he would
re=appear - and thus step by step Morton
found himself lying with Myosu on
a plate of thin ice hardly capable of
supporting them - and margining a
pool of water already broken by previous
visits of the Walrus.
