strange to say, while these became painfully more audi=
=ble but without detracting from the
sentiment of external silence which
pervaded me. I was in the midst
of a dead inorganic world - not a
movement of life marred the intensity
of inaction. Looking from a high
cone of granite I could pass from
the curtailed area of our moonlight
into the immense blackness which

I thought of the dear companionship
of my race - Beyond this dark
shadow was the continent of America
which I as an explorer had carried

discipline and be under a guarded
restraint of manner - but it cant be helped.]
helped - All our old times ease and
social intercourse must cease - I am surroun=
=ded by untrusted men - Dr. Hayes
still occupies my bed - his toe is healing
and his tolerably hard worked Captains
sleeping as he can catch it - on a [camp?]
stool shake down - The man takes it
cooly and gets it thank God ungrudging=
=ly - I will share with these men llike
brothers but I can give them no trust.
