Of the party forward of the beam - which
comprises those returned from the attempt
to quit the brig - I have two cases of
marked scurvy the rest six in number
are well.

This party have as yet been employed
only upon such occupations as were necessary
for their own comforts - they have never
applied for readmission into the Expedition
and could not with justice be expected
to perform its duties. They are entitled
to no pay and are only regarded as
men who voluntarily and with
a full knowledge of the circumstances quitted
the Expedition - have returned to it as
to a refuge - seeking such shelter and
hospitality as their case indicated -
Thus far then our own little party have
done all the work - and we now see
our effective force reduced to three viz

Mr Ohlsen
Hans Hendrick
and the Commander -

Upon us falls the heavy burden of the
hourly observations and the
routine of our domestic life even to
cooking which we take in rotation -

It will not be wondered at -
not with this state of things I look
anxiously for Petersens departure
which the boding weather forbids.
