a [???day] such as two Canadian brethren of wide
observation have assured [??e] is not to be found
in all Canada.

The establishment of the US. Military posts
at Monterey brought with it an uncertainty as to
how it would our interest but after a little [flurry]
at the first all has settled down and a most care-
ful watch and inquiry have shown no sign of injury.
There have been some abuses handled easily with
the Cooperation of all Concerned and no offence seems
likely during the summer, the military au-
thorities local & general have put themselves at
our disposal in a way that assures quick & ef-
fective handling of any trouble.

The town expands and with its growth some matters
come to the front that must have attention.

There is constant Complaint of the absence of places
and opportunities for diversion and amusement.
An organization to provide something of this sort in
case [?] was considered seriously for a time during
[margin]156[/margin] the year but nothing came of it and now private
parties are coming to the [front] offering to supply di-
versions, the applications of service of these will be
before you at this time. A public building with
[?] etc is a great necessity.

The improvements provided last year
are not yet at hand, a [wharf] and bath house
are urgently needed and it is hoped they may
come in some way before another season.

Respectfully Submitted
