then from there it came to France, where chivalry
is more powerful than anywhere else in the world.
And there are many knights as well as scholars.
And both of them flourish there. For chivalry
always follows scholarship, wherever it goes. The king of
France, therefore, should be pleased that such lordship
as the science of scholarship can come to be
in his realm, for from it everyone can draw
out human wisdom without the supply ever becoming
less. For it is like a fountain
which flows continually, and the more it
flows the healthier it is. And the further the rivulet
that comes from the fountain flows, the more water
there is for everyone to use as they need. In the same way,
I can tell you that Paris is the fountain where one can draw
out this science, more than any other place that is or can exist.
And since scholarship is so advanced in France,
one should therefore come to know through reasoning whether
the inheritors of France particularly value it. For even as
the sun is the most beautiful of all the stars
and causes so many good things to be born in the world out
