any other women, for they believe that women
cannot hold themselves true to one man only,
but will cheat on him with other men. And for this
reason they reject all women except for procreation.
Another kind of people is in this province, who
are called Barbarins but who call themselves
Jacobins, after Jacob who was their master
in ancient times. They are Christians who have
been corrupted by the marriages and alliances they
have made with the Saracens, and who march
at their side. These Barbarins extend over forty
kingdoms in every direction. They do not believe
that confession to any man has any value, but only
when it is to God. When these Jacobins
confess to God they bring fire
and incense close by, handling them carefully, so that
their thoughts will go up with the smoke towards Our Lord,
but it does not happen the way they believe.
For they misunderstand Saint John Baptist, who
