whose nature is so marvelous that one can extinguish
burning firebrands in it and then re-light them
afterwards. In Ethiopia there is another one, which by night
is so hot that no one can drink from it but by day is so cold
that one freezes solid in it. In Lorraine, near the city of Metz,
there is a water that flows down, which they boil down
in large copper pans, so that it becomes good salt.
This water supplies the salt for the entire region. It surges
from a well nearby that is called David's Well. In this area
there are other fountains that are so hot that they scald.
And in this same place there are others that are as cold
as ice. There are baths there, moderate in temperature,
a mix of cold and hot water. The skin of those who bathe in
these baths becomes totally healthy. There are other
fountains that are completely black. People consider these
to be very healthy and go there to drink the water in place
of potions and medicines. They often make strong
