people today, as they say, think more, and care much
more, about how to fill their big, fat
bellies and make them even fatter; by this
they will come all the sooner to die and rot, by their
rotting food which is too strong and crass, which lands them in
difficulties and then brings them to shame and damnation. The ancient
fathers did not conduct themselves like this. For they did not
seek to eat or drink except to alleviate their
hunger and thirst, to sustain themselves and keep
their bodies in good health. In this way they could
help themselves by means of their good sense, as everyone must do
in order to come to the glory of Our Lord. And they lived
twenty or thirty years longer than all but one percent of people today,
[for people's] lives are short due to their foolish and
outrageous conduct. Certainly these people
do not listen to the word of Our Saviour.
Jesus Christ spoke to the devil when the devil tried
to tempt Him with trickery, saying he would make bread from
stone for Him to eat. To which Jesus replied
that man does not live on bread alone, but rather he lives,
he said, by the word that comes from the mouth
