Since I have explained to you about Asia and its countries
and regions, I will now speak about Europe and its
conditions, but briefly since we can often hear these things
spoken of elsewhere. The first country in Europe is Romania
and then there is part of Constantinople, Retecorinde (see note), Macedonia,
Thesabia, Bohemia, Sapronia, Pirre, and a very healthful
country called Arcadia. In this country there is a fountain
in which one can extinguish burning coals or flaming
logs. In Arcadia there is a stone that, once it has been
set alight, cannot be extinguished
by any means in the world until it has burned itself out.
After Arcadia is the kingdom of Denmark, then that of
Hungary, then Austria. After that comes Germany, which
we call Allemagne, which has a great expanse toward
the west, and within this expanse there are several great
and powerful kingdoms. In Germany there rises a
great river called the Dunoc [Danube], which flows
all the way to Constantinople and there enters the sea. But
