whether that be paradise, hell, purgatory, limbo,
or elsewhere, and which of them is better
and which is worse. As for me, it seems to me that
the location that is enclosed in the earth, as it is
said, is hell. I say this because hell cannot possibly
be in the air, which is a very noble place. So
I freely maintain that it is not in the sky. For the
sky is so excellent, pure and clean that hell could
not exist there, being horribly putrid, ugly, and dark.
Also, it is heavier than any other thing. For all
these reasons one can clearly understand that
hell has made its place in the lowest, darkest,
and most vile part of the earth. And I have
already told you the reasons why in truth it cannot
be in the air or stay in the sky, for it is in every point
contrary to it. For in one nothing can
be found that is not glory and consolation: that is paradise. In the
other nothing is spoken but of suffering: that is hell.
For this reason hell separates itself as far as it can from paradise,
