Description

Ariel Lathrop (1830-1908) was a younger brother of Jane Lathrop Stanford who moved from New York to California and became business manager for Leland Stanford. Ariel was joined in 1877 by his younger brother, Charles Lathrop, in managing the Stanford estate. Ariel was given the responsibility by Leland Stanford of supervising the construction of Leland Stanford Jr. University. Ariel returned to New York in 1892 after the initial campus had been laid out and the first students welcomed.
