Description

John Philip Newman (1826-1899), pastor in the Methodist Episcopal faith, serving in many churches, established the Metropolitan M.E. Church in Washington, D.C., where he served as pastor on and off through his life. Was chaplain of the U.S. Senate from 1869 to 1874, was elected Bishop in 1888, delivered the eulogy at the memorial service for Leland Stanford Jr.
