Benjamin Ide Wheeler (1854-1927) was President of the University of California from 1899 to 1919. Prior to that he had various teaching positions before completing his Ph.D. at Heidelberg, Germany in 1885. He was an Instructor at Harvard for one year then became Professor at Cornell for 14 years in Greek and Comparative Philology until taking the position at Berkeley.
