Gulian ver Planck Lansing (1860-?) was the brother of Katharine Groot (Lansing) Stanford, the wife of Welton Stanford, Leland Stanford's younger brother. Gulian was therefore Leland Stanford's brother's brother-in-law. Gulian was born in Albany and raised in Schenectady, NY, received a B.A. in 1883 from Union College. He was on the staff of the Chicago Herald for three years, then moved to San Francisco, working for the American Oil Co., then moved to Seattle in 1888. He became regional salesman for the Crane Elevator Co., which merged into the Otis Elevator Co. He was elected to the Seattle city council for 1891 to 1892.
