Doctor Edward W. Charles (?-1898) came to California in 1872 and ended up in Palo Alto in 1892. He became Palo Alto's first Health Officer when the town incorporated. He and his family lived at 451 Channing Avenue and his office was in the Ledyard Building on the corner of University Avenue and Emerson Street, where 201 University Ave. currently is.
