Russell Alexander Alger (1836-1907) was a businessman and politician from Michigan who became very successful after the Civil War as a timber baron in Michigan, was elected Governor of Michigan (1885-1887), appointed Secretary of War in President William McKinley's cabinet (1897-1899) and was elected to represent Michigan in the U.S. Senate (1902-1907).
