Emma F. (Gummer) Grant (1839-1926) was born in London and arrived in San Francisco in 1849. In 1857 she married Adam Grant (1828-1904), a Scottish dry goods merchant who came to California in 1850 to mine gold but never made it past San Francisco where he returned to the dry goods business and made his fortune, being named Director of several banks and companies. The couple was very active in the social life of San Francisco. They were not related to President Ulysses S. Grant.
