Mrs J. R. Hayes



Sarah Elizabeth (Rutter) Hayes (1832-1920) was born in West Chester, PA, and married Dr. Joshua R. Hayes (1831-1926) in 1858. Dr. Hayes served as a doctor in the Civil War and after the war was a publisher and doctor in Harrisburg, PA. In 1886 he was appointed Medical Examiner, Bureau of Prisons, and the family moved to Washington, D.C.
