Mary E. Coffey was the longtime personal secretary and attendant of Julia Dent Grant (1826-1902), wife of President Ulysses S. Grant. Miss Coffey travelled with Mrs. Grant and frequently wrote letters for her and helped to write much of Mrs. Grant's memoirs that were eventually published in 1975.
