Description

Timothy Nolan Hopkins (1859-1936) was a founding and long-serving Trustee of Stanford University who acquired and developed the land that became Palo Alto. He was born Timothy Nolan and grew up in the household of railroad executive Mark Hopkins as his mother was employed as housekeeper. After Mark Hopkins died in 1878, his widow Mary adopted Timothy in 1879. He became Treasurer of the Central Pacific Railroad and served as Director of several other companies.
